# Installation (/docs/installation)

Install gh-select with gh extension install. A standalone binary and go install also work.

## Install [#install]

You need the [GitHub CLI](https://cli.github.com/) logged in (`gh auth login`) and `git`. Then:

```bash
gh extension install remcostoeten/gh-select
```

Run it:

```bash
gh select
```

## Check it works [#check-it-works]

```bash
gh select doctor
```

![gh select doctor reporting git, gh and auth as ok](/screens/doctor.png)

Anything marked `[x]` comes with a hint on how to fix it.

## Update [#update]

```bash
gh extension upgrade gh-select
```

When a new release exists, the header of the app tells you and shows this command. Set `GH_SELECT_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1` to turn the notice off.

## Remove [#remove]

```bash
gh extension remove gh-select
```

## Other ways to install [#other-ways-to-install]

You rarely need these. Both still use your `gh` login.
